Movie Analysis Paper:

In addition to entertaining us, movies offer detailed portrayals of human social behavior. As popular culture, these films depict the dominant or at least available ideas about crime, criminals, and criminal justice of their respective eras. As examples of “popular theorizing,” these films provide an excellent opportunity to consider how and why ideas about crime have changed over the course of the 20th and into the 21st century.

Choose one of the films listed below. Use your discernment to determine what is appropriate for you to view. Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), Blackboard Jungle (1955), West Side Story (1961), Boyz ‘N the Hood (1991), The Basketball Diaries (1995), Coach Carter (2005) and Bully (2011).

View the film you choose at least once. (Two viewings will offer a distinct advantage). Then, after reviewing your notes and readings, identify and explain the particular theoretical perspective(s) illustrated by each film.
The 8-10 page paper will consist of the following:

  • A title page should include the full title of the paper, the course name, the course number, and the instructor’s name (APA format).
  • A brief introduction, in which you will introduce the movie, three theoretical perspectives and grab your audience’s attention
  • Spend at least 2 pages on each theory, providing support from peer-reviewed journal articles, and brief illustrations from the movie
  • Six to eight cited references, with parenthetical references within the text
  • Conclusion, synthesizing theories and illustrations
  • Originality and thought are also important, so avoid quotes. Please do not waste a lot of the paper summarizing the film; describe just enough as is necessary to illustrate the theories.

The cited references must be current (last five years), peer-based journal articles. In addition to the required number of citations, you may also include older classic studies, the text, open source articles and biblical references. In order to help promote time management, and strengthen your other academic competencies, make sure you begin your preparation for this assignment early. For each calendar day late, ten points are deducted.
