RE: ELP-Experiential 20 Research Data Entries

As part of your artistic journey, you will be creating ELP-Experiential Research Data Entries. There are to be twenty (20) entries. – This should be completed throughout the semester (process) and not a few days before the work (product) is due.

CHECK COURSE CALENDAR FOR DUE DATE:

Assignment #14-ELP-Experiential Research Data Entries

The Data Entries have a two-fold purpose:

1. It contains your personal research as you experience the works of your artist. Your experiential research data will be collected in the form of written entries in which you briefly tell what you think and feel about a selected work of art by your artist, which you have experienced through your senses, listening, seeing, or reading, and WHY.

2. It will become Part III. of your ELP-Paper and is the experiential portion of your ELP. (Interviews, surveys, and etc. are not necessary or required for your experiential research).

SELECTING THE WORKS OF YOUR ARTIST:

You may select the specific works of art you will experience and use for your data entries. A suggestion is to experience these selected works of art in the chronological order of their creation. This will give you the opportunity to more fully understand and appreciate your artist’s artistic growth and development. Very often early works are very different from works created at the end of an artist’s career.

LENGTH & FORMAT OF AN ENTRY:

An entry should contain a list of information followed by at one paragraph. (A paragraph must have a least three sentences). Write in complete sentences. Entries may be singlep-spaced. – You may write this section only, of the ELP, in the first person. Remember that this is the only part of the ELP that is in the first person. The other parts of the paper will be written in the third person.

The ELP-Experiential Research Data Entries (20) should be ONE file. It will be submitted as an ELP-assignment in the ASSIGNMENTS section. – I would suggest that you create your data entries as a Word document and save it to your computer, to a disc, or external hard drive, and, if you worry like me about loosing a file, you can e-mail the file to yourself after each entry. I have had students that did not provide for copies of their work and then lost all of their data entries days before they were due.

Each entry must include:

A LIST Containing:

1. The Number of the entry (1-20) – ie. Entry #1.

2. The date you experienced the work of art.

2. The Title of the work of art (books, tiles of music composition, & paintings are in italics – songs & poetry are in quotation marks).

3. State the date the work of art was created.

4. State the name of your artist.

5. State the Location of the work of art you experience (book, web site, museum, CD, etc.).

A PARAGRAPH following the List:

What to Write in the Paragraph of Each Data Entry:

In your own words:

1. Comment on your feelings & thoughts about the selected work of art and WHY. State what YOU think the work of art means and WHY.

2. Write a sentence stating if you personally like or dislike the selected work of art and Why.

3. Write a sentence stating if you would have the work of art in your home and Why.

This is not meant to be difficult. It is your impressions/data and WHY. It is data collected from your observations.

What not to Write in the Paragraph:

1. Do not write about the process of your ELP and class work.

For example, do not write about how long it takes to get books for your research, what is happening in your daily life, what you did for the class on each day, what you found out about your artist, or what an expert said about a specific work of art.

2. It is not necessary to include research information on a work of art. I am interested in what YOU have experienced and think about the work of art. – However, if you include a few sentences from a research source about your selected work of art, you must give the full citation in MLA-Format of the source.

Title: Diego and I

Date Created: 1949

Artist: Frida Kahlo

Source: Frida Kahlo Fans Web Site

This painting touched me because Frida Kahlo’s pain is evident by her tears. The picture of her husband on her forehead implies that she is sad thinking about him. Kahlo painted this self-portrait during the period when her husband, Diego Rivera, was having a notorious affair with the film star Maria Felix, who was a friend of Kahlo’s, as well. The image is a sad one for the viewer. Her long hair has wrapped itself around her neck suggesting that she feels strangled by the situation. In many of Kahlo’s self-portraits, she uses her hair as a way to express emotion. I liked this painting very much because of the emotions that I feel when I look at it. This is something I would have in my home.
