Why do we like to display our lives on social media? The answer is simple: we all need attention, validation, love and acceptance, and social media has become a way to reach out and craft an online “self” that can change, morph and grow just as we do in “real” life. Social media is a sophisticated form of personal narrative, but it works through crafting a self in relation to communities and public narratives that we relate to for one reason or another. We like certain platforms more than others because of our communication style, and these platforms and communities become extensions of us and who we are.
